Router compatibility table

ROUTER
COMPATIBILITY
TABLE

The following is a list of recommended routers. Under certain circumstances even routers which are listed under the “Not Recommended Devices” section may work properly after configuration adjustments, but we strongly suggest to get one of the recommended routers to avoid spending hours on the phone with the support.

We highly recommend checking all network equipment on site against this list before deploying our Business voice-over-IP services in your office. If your router is not listed, please contact our sales representative to discuss.

Whenever possible you should choose a router that has QoS (Quality of Service) if you plan to share the same internet connection with non-VoIP services (such as desktop computers).

Please note that in most cases the “SIP ALG” option on the router must be disabled and the “Consistent NAT” option must be enabled.

Linksys WRT54G, WRT54GX, WRT54GL, WRT54GS

Current Status: Not Compatible
Recommendation: Replace Device or Replace Firmware
Comments: This router is not recommended for use with VoIP services using the stock firmware from Linksys. This model router is known to damage and modify SIP packets in such a way that it prevents VoIP packets from being formatted correctly and can cause a multitude of problems.

You may be able to install custom firmware such as DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com) as a replacement. Note that the procedure does require some technical knowledge and ability. The DD-WRT firmware allows you to disable SIP ALG and enable QOS (Quality of Service), but this has not been tested in our labs yet.

Thompson TG-585

Current Status: Not Compatible
Recommendation: Replace Device
Comments:
This router is not compatible with VoIP services. There is no method to disable the internal SIP ALG on device. Other customers have found that bridging the device to a compatible router did not result in a workaround. We recommend replacing this device with a compatible modem and router.

Netgear Routers (entry level only)

Current Status: Not Compatible
Recommendation: Replace Device
Comments:
Most cheap Netgear routers will not work with VoIP services and have been blacklisted on our network to prevent customer issues. Most Netgear routers lack the ability to disable the internal SIP ALG which causes intermittent issues with phone service.

We recommend avoiding this brand of router unless it is marked as “business”. Avoid to buy cheap devices (average router cost should be more than $100)

This router is not recommended for use with VoIP services. This router causes issues related to storing configuration and failed firmware downloads with Aastra series phones.
